Day 28: Animal Welfare Course by Director of Taipei City Animal Protection Office

Madame Liu arranged another animal protection course for us again to improve our understanding towards animal welfare and protection. This time we had the Director of Taipei City Animal Protection Office, Yen I-Feng to deliver the course. The course is mainly about the current condition of the stray animals and endangered species in Taiwan, and also the strategies of animal shelter and the authorities for animal welfare. The vision of the office is to build Taipei City into an animal-friendly city. The mission is to promote and protect animal rights and welfare. Over the years, the office had gained several achievements in managing the pets and rescuing the strays, as well as educating the people and preventing epidemic diseases.

Recruitment of animal rescue office in the shelter is not that easy. Academic qualification is not that important, but the attitude towards animals. Candidates who apply for the job will be tested on their interaction with animals. They need to be fearless to any kind of animals, must be able to catch snake and driving in the car with snake beside them. They must have the ability to lure dogs to transfer them from cage to cage, and also have the stamina to run 50 meter carrying a cage.
According to the director, the good example of attitude and treatment towards animals set by the authority is more effective to influence the people than though education method. The attitude and treatment of the citizens towards animals directly reflects the civilization and development of the country.
